K-Beauty Ingredients: What Does What

A plain-English breakdown of the hero actives in Korean skincare

Korean skincare is known for its innovative — and sometimes unusual — ingredients. Snail mucin? Fermented rice? They sound strange, but the science is real. Here's a plain-English breakdown of the most important K-beauty actives and exactly what they do for your skin.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule that occurs naturally in the body and can hold up to 1,000× its weight in water. In skincare, it draws moisture from the environment and deeper skin layers into the surface, making skin look plump and bouncy. Look for multi-weight HA (low and high molecular weight) for hydration at multiple skin depths. Best for: all skin types, especially dry and dehydrated. Found in: BB Lab Hyaluronic Acid Ampoule, SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica.

Centella Asiatica (Cica)

Centella asiatica — also called cica or tiger grass — is a centuries-old herbal remedy that Korean science has supercharged. It's rich in madecassoside and asiaticoside, compounds that reduce inflammation, strengthen the skin barrier, and promote healing. It's the go-to ingredient for sensitive, reactive, or acne-prone skin. Best for: sensitive, acne-prone, compromised barrier skin. Found in: SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Serum, Anua Heartleaf Toner.

Snail Mucin (Snail Secretion Filtrate)

Snail mucin is the secretion collected from snails (ethically). It's packed with glycoproteins, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, and zinc — a combination that hydrates deeply, fades hyperpigmentation, speeds up barrier repair, and smooths texture. It also has natural antimicrobial properties making it excellent for acne-prone skin. Best for: all skin types, especially acne, scarring, and ageing concerns. Found in: COSRX Advanced Snail Mucin Gel Cleanser, COR Snail Hydrogel Mask.

Heartleaf (Houttuynia Cordata)

Heartleaf is a plant native to East Asia used for generations in herbal medicine. In skincare, it's a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant — it calms redness, controls excess sebum, and soothes skin sensitised by pollution or UV exposure. It's the star of the Anua brand. Best for: oily, combination, sensitive, and acne-prone skin.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide is one of the most versatile and well-researched skincare actives. At 2–5% it minimises pore appearance and controls oil. At 5–10% it fades hyperpigmentation and brightens uneven skin tone. It also strengthens the skin barrier and reduces redness. Best for: oily, combination, dull, or uneven-toned skin. Found in: BOS Dayscreen Moisturiser, BOS Glow Sun Stick.

Retinol

Retinol (Vitamin A) is the gold standard anti-ageing active. It accelerates skin cell turnover, fades dark spots, smooths fine lines, and refines pore appearance. The COSRX 0.3% formulation is an excellent entry point — strong enough to show results but gentle enough for beginners, buffered with skin-soothing ingredients. Best for: anti-ageing, acne, texture, and uneven tone. Use at night only. Found in: COSRX Retinol 0.3 Cream.

Collagen Peptides

Topical collagen molecules are too large to penetrate skin, but low-molecular-weight collagen peptides — especially as supplements — signal the body to produce more of its own collagen. The BB Lab Low Molecular Collagen 5000 supplement delivers 5,000mg of collagen peptides daily for firmness and elasticity improvements from within. Best for: anti-ageing, loss of firmness. Found in: BB Lab Low Molecular Collagen 5000.
